WHEN TO TRAVEL
With mild to warm water and air temperatures, the Great Barrier Reef region has something to offer all year round, however there are certain times of year which draw some special attractions:
Minke Whales - grace us with their presence between May to September each year, though July to July is the peak of the season. The playful Minke Whales form the only known predictable aggregation in the world in the Great Barrier Reef. Queensland is the only place in the world where humans can interact with them.
Humpback Whales –June to September each year, Humpback whales migrate to the warmer waters of Cairns along the east coast of Australia. Each year these Humpbacks leave the frozen climates of the southern oceans and are in transit 8,000 km each year to get all the way from the Antarctica to the warmer waters of tropical Far North Queensland to either find a mate or to give birth to their calves in the safety of the waters of the Great Barrier Reef.
Black Marlin Game Fishing Season –this occurs between September and December and draws professional and amateur game fishers annually. This is the best place in the world to catch Marlin weighing in over 1000 pounds.
Kite Boarding – from May to November the South East Trade winds produce perfect conditions for kiting the reef.
Sports Attractions – Marathons, Triathlons and Iron Man events are held regularly, year round. Cairns will be hosting the Basketball event for the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2018. See all events happening around the Great Barrier Reef HERE
Important note - although November to May is considered “stinger” (jellyfish) season in tropical Australian waters, these are predominantly only a problem along the coastal beaches and river mouths and do not usually affect the Great Barrier Reef’s waters. However, as a precaution and to ensure you enjoy your day in the water, we provide you with lycra body suits. As well as protecting you from stingers they offer great sun protection as the UV is also much higher this time of year. However, if you have any concerns around this please do not hesitate to contact us for more information and clarification.
